Donald J. Trump is so in love with himself that no matter what he did, he is convinced that he is totally innocent of any wrongdoing. In fact, I would be very surprised if Trump truly understands what constitutes wrongdoing regarding these matters, but I’m certain he thinks he does. That makes him every defense attorney’s nightmare.
Trump said on Wednesday in regards to being interviewed by Robert Mueller:
“I’m looking forward to it, actually,”
“Here’s the story, just so you understand,” Mr. Trump said during an impromptu question-and-answer session with reporters in the West Wing. “There’s been no collusion whatsoever. There’s no obstruction whatsoever, and I’m looking forward to it.”
All of us rewrite history to satisfy our emotions. The human mind as an accurate recording device is not very accurate. Trump’s narcissism is rather overpowering. He is a slave to it. He could very easily convince himself so fully that he didn’t do any of the things he is accused of that he could easily lie about them, all the while believing that he is telling the truth. The accusations are lies. They are fake news. It’s all a big conspiracy against him.
That’s where I think this is going. That’s why prosecutors try to rely on hard physical evidence instead of testimony. If Mueller has the evidence, then Trump is cooked, no matter what he says.
Trump has given many depositions during his extensive career as a defendant. He appeared confident and truthful while being deposed during his Trump University fraud case, which he ultimately settled for $25 million, all the while proclaiming his innocence. It’s a wonderful thing that he has convinced himself that his upcoming FBI interview will exonerate him (better than anyone has ever been exonerated before). The problem, in this case, is the individuals conducting Trump’s interview will know much more about the truth than he can imagine.
Trump will never testify under oath because he is congenitally incapable of telling the truth about anything. He would plead the 5th, or obfuscate incoherently, or lose his memory like his Attorney General. But he is not going to tell the truth under any circumstances. He doesn’t know what the truth is any more.
Caught between pressures from the Mueller investigation and his lawyers Trump has no choice but to express a desire to be present before the panel to answer questions under the oath, though what oath means to Trump is not always the same as perceived by others who care about the sanctity of law. The interesting thing is that Mueller will ask Trump the questions that he already has the answers to. He has already gotten info from Flynn, Papadopoulos and now Rick Gates. Trump thinks he is above the law, and it’s not just conspiracy to collude, obstruction of justice, but its money laundering too. Trump is as guilty as they come, that’s why he and his cronies have been trying to discredit Mueller.
Trump strikes me as the exact kind of person the FBI LOVES getting in interviews. People that think they’re smarter than them. People who think they’ll get away telling lies to them. People who’s ego can be manipulated. People who think they’ll be able to “strike a deal” on their own terms.
I think the most important part of what Trump said on Wednesday was: Any such interview would be “subject to my lawyers, and all of that.” It’s similar to when he promised to show his tax returns when his audit was completed. I’m not going to hold my breath.
The candidacy and the presidency of Donald Trump has wasted trillions of hours of our collective time. Every single day he lobs some new moronic blob of stupidity at the human race while his Republican enablers validate every lie, dog whistle, and slur. The Republican Party (with help from Russia) is doing what the Nazis, Al Qaeda, ISIS, and others couldn’t do; kill the American Dream. If there is a way out of this mess it’s going to involve massive turnout on Election Day, protest and ultimately some Democratic Politicians with the backbone to undo the countless mistakes this nihilist has made. “American exceptionalism” is a laughable concept at this point.
